We stop at an unusual rest stop in Idaho (just north of Blackfoot on RT 15), it has a lava formation that covers a 222 squares miles. It can get as hot as 90 degree in the summer and minus 30 degree in the winter. Not sure how it got "Half Acre" name with it being as big as it was?
The molten lava bubbled and oozed at 2,000 degrees F (ten times hotter than boiling water), scorching everything in its path for miles. A mixture of steam and smoke hung in the air. Now long cooled, this lava flow is part of an extremely harsh environment known as the high dessert.
